Department of Anthropology
Anthropology is a scientific discipline dedicated to understanding human life -past and present - through the study of cultural, social, political, and economic systems. At its core, anthropology explores the richness of cultural diversity and places people at the center of its inquiry, examining how societies live, adapt, and evolve across time and space.
BA Program in Anthropology and Cultural Heritage
(launched in 2023)
The Department of Anthropology offers a dynamic undergraduate programme, BA in Anthropology and Cultural Heritage, designed to provide students with a solid foundation in anthropological theory, methods, and practice. The programme emphasizes the critical study of cultural heritage while encouraging engagement with local and international research projects.
As one of the most vibrant and creative academic environments at the University of Prishtina, the department promotes interdisciplinary learning and fosters critical thinking. Students are exposed to both classical and contemporary debates within anthropology, as well as across the broader fields of social sciences and humanities. The department values a combined theoretical and hands-on approach, preparing students to analyze real-world cultural and social issues.
Students enrolled in the BA in Anthropology and Cultural Heritage follow a three-year curriculum that reflects global academic standards. The program allows them to explore anthropology as a core discipline while focusing on cultural heritage as a primary thematic area.
This dual emphasis enables students to gain deep, empirically grounded knowledge and to understand the significance of cultural heritage in both historical and contemporary contexts. The structure mirrors international models, where a major discipline is paired with a specific field or theme to offer a well-rounded education.
Cultural heritage refers to the tangible and intangible elements of culture that communities and societies value and seek to preserve. It includes archaeological and architectural heritage, intangible/spiritual cultural practices, natural landscapes and environments, movable cultural artefacts.
Cultural heritage spans a wide spectrum: from castles and museums to traditional rituals and historical festivals; from collective memory to cultural tourism. These elements represent the identity, values, and history of a community and are central to anthropological inquiry.
Students learn how anthropological tools and approaches can be applied to the study of heritage. They explore how cultural heritage is interpreted, protected, preserved, and represented in various sociocultural and political contexts.
